Most first-time visitors to GDL Airport stand at the security checkpoint and wonder which way to go. The answer is almost always the same: go through central security first, then follow the signs to your pier. Pier A handles all international departures; Pier B handles domestic flights. That single rule accounts for 95% of navigation decisions at this airport.
What surprises people is the physical scale. GDL feels smaller than it is from the outside, but Pier A in particular is a genuinely full-featured international departures concourse — proper restaurant, duty-free corridor, two VIP lounges, and gates spaced far enough apart that the walk from A1 to A8 is meaningful. I've timed it at just over 11 minutes at a normal pace. Build that into your connection planning. The terminal clocks and departure boards are reliable, but I'd add a 5-minute buffer for anything post-security because the Pier A café near A3 has a magnetic pull that costs people time they didn't budget for.
The thing most guides get wrong about this airport: Pier B is not an inferior version of Pier A. It's designed for high-frequency domestic turnaround, which means faster boarding, more efficient deplaning, and generally shorter security queues. If you're connecting from an international arrival to a domestic connection, the transfer corridor between piers is clearly marked — don't exit the secure area unless you specifically need to. The connection walk between the piers' furthest gates takes about 14 minutes; the closest gates connect in under 8.

GDL's single-terminal, two-pier layout is one of the more logical airport designs in Mexico — once you know the system, navigation is intuitive.
Single terminal building — two piers (A: international, B: domestic)
16 gates total: A1–A8 and B1–B8
Longest pier-to-pier walk: 12–15 min at normal pace
Free Wi-Fi throughout — password posted at info desks
The Pier A Duty-Free Walk
Pier A · Gates A1–A4 corridor
If you've got 20 minutes, walk the full length of the Pier A duty-free corridor even if you don't plan to buy. The tequila selection between A1 and A2 is genuinely exceptional — better variety than most Guadalajara liquor stores, and the prices are competitive once you factor in no IVA for international departures.
Seating bank near Gate A5
Pier A · Gate A5 east wall
The single best charging setup in the entire airport — a dedicated bank of outlets with USB-A and USB-C ports, relatively quiet, and right next to a decent café. Gets busy on morning peak hours; arrive 15 minutes early to claim a seat.
The Pier B Fast Lane
Pier B · Security bypass corridor
When Pier B domestic security has a long queue, check the far-left lane — it's technically the same checkpoint but sees significantly shorter lines because most travelers instinctively queue at the center lanes. Saves 10–15 minutes on busy morning departures.
Domestic → Domestic (Pier B)
Airlines say 60 min. Reality: 45 min is workable if you have no checked bags and move quickly. With bags or a leisurely pace, stick to 75–90 min to avoid stress.
Domestic → International (B → A)
Allow 2 hours minimum. You'll clear domestic arrival, walk to Pier A, re-clear international security, and potentially queue at passport control. Factor in 15 minutes of walking plus security wait times.
International → Domestic (A → B)
The most underestimated connection. Customs and immigration can add 30–45 min on busy US-arrival banks. Budget 2.5 hours. Use the connection corridor inside the secure area — do not exit to the main terminal unless necessary.
Pro tip from Marco: Ask the gate agent or customer service desk to flag your connecting flight if you have under 90 minutes and you're arriving internationally. Airlines will sometimes hold a departure for 5–7 minutes if multiple connecting passengers are inbound on the same bank.
