Guadalajara International Airport features a single terminal building with two distinct piers, making navigation relatively straightforward compared to larger multi-terminal airports. Understanding the layout, knowing which pier serves your flight, and familiarizing yourself with key amenities will help you move through the airport efficiently and reduce pre-flight stress. This guide provides everything you need to know about navigating GDL's terminal facilities, from check-in to boarding.
GDL Airport's terminal is divided into two piers that serve different types of flights. Pier A is the international pier, housing gates A1 through A8. This pier primarily serves flights to and from the United States, Canada, and other international destinations. Airlines operating from Pier A include Aeroméxico, American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, and other international carriers. Pier A features enhanced customs and immigration facilities, duty-free shopping, and amenities designed for international travelers. If you're flying internationally, you'll check in at the main terminal building and then proceed through security to reach Pier A gates.
Pier B handles domestic flights within Mexico, with gates B1 through B8. This pier is the domain of Mexico's low-cost carriers, primarily Volaris, VivaAerobus, and Magnicharters, along with some domestic Aeroméxico flights. Pier B has a more streamlined design focused on efficient boarding and deplaning for high-frequency domestic routes. The pier includes basic amenities like cafés, newsstands, and seating areas, but fewer luxury services compared to Pier A. Domestic travelers will find the check-in process faster and security lines generally shorter than in the international section, especially during off-peak hours.
If you're connecting between an international and domestic flight (or vice versa), you'll need to transfer between piers. The good news is that both piers are connected within the secure area, so if you're making an international-to-domestic connection, you won't need to exit security and re-enter. After clearing customs and immigration on an international arrival, follow signs for "Domestic Connections" or "Pier B" to reach your connecting gate. The walk between the furthest gates (A8 to B8, for example) takes approximately 12 to 15 minutes at a normal pace, so budget at least 20 minutes for connections to account for any delays or stops. If you're connecting from a domestic flight to an international departure, you'll walk from Pier B to Pier A and then proceed through the international departure security checkpoint. For tight connections under 90 minutes, inform airline staff upon arrival—they may be able to expedite your transfer or hold the connecting flight if multiple passengers are affected.
Knowing where essential services are located can save valuable time. Currency exchange booths are available in the main terminal building before security, as well as in both Pier A and Pier B post-security areas. Rates are typically better in the city, but airport exchange is convenient for small amounts. ATMs are located throughout the terminal, including near the check-in areas, in both piers, and near baggage claim. Restaurants and cafés are concentrated in three main areas: the pre-security food court in the main terminal, a cluster of dining options in Pier A near gates A3-A5, and several quick-service options in Pier B near gates B2-B4. For sit-down meals, Pier A offers more variety and higher-end options.
Airport lounges are located exclusively in Pier A, with the Aeroméxico Salon Premier near gate A4 and the independent VIP Lounge Guadalajara near gate A6—both accessible with Priority Pass, LoungeKey, or day passes purchased at the entrance. Restrooms are well-distributed throughout both piers, with family restrooms available near gates A2 and B3. Charging stations and free Wi-Fi are available throughout the terminal, though dedicated charging areas with multiple outlets are located near gates A5, A7, B2, and B6. Duty-free shopping is concentrated in Pier A between gates A1 and A4, offering perfumes, cosmetics, alcohol, tobacco, and Mexican handicrafts—remember that duty-free is only available for international departures.
Understanding walking times helps you plan connections and avoid rushing. From the main security checkpoint to Pier A gates, expect 5 to 8 minutes to reach gates A1-A4, and 10 to 12 minutes for gates A5-A8. From the main security checkpoint to Pier B gates, allow 6 to 9 minutes for gates B1-B4, and 11 to 14 minutes for gates B5-B8. Between piers, the walk from any Pier A gate to any Pier B gate ranges from 8 to 15 minutes depending on which gates you're connecting between. These estimates assume a normal walking pace with no stops—add 5 minutes if you're traveling with young children, have mobility limitations, or plan to stop at a restroom or shop. For connections, airlines typically recommend a minimum connection time of 90 minutes for domestic-to-domestic, 2 hours for domestic-to-international, and 2.5 hours for international-to-international connections to account for customs, immigration, and potential delays.
