What to Pack for Mexico: The No-Nonsense GDL Traveler Checklist

Packing for a trip to Guadalajara or anywhere in Jalisco is different from packing for, say, Cancún or Los Cabos. The weather is different (milder, more seasonal), the customs rules have nuances, and the things that will make your trip easier aren't always what travel bloggers list first. Here's what actually matters.

Guadalajara Climate: What to Expect

Guadalajara sits at 1,540 meters above sea level, which means the climate is significantly cooler and more temperate than coastal Mexico. Summers (June–September) are warm days (24–28°C) with afternoon rain; winters (December–February) are mild days (20–23°C) but cool evenings that can drop to 8–12°C. This surprises many first-time visitors who pack only shorts and sandals.

My recommendation: Pack layers regardless of season. A lightweight jacket is essential year-round, especially if you're traveling in evenings or heading to higher-altitude nearby towns like Tlaquepaque or Tequila.

GDL Customs: What You Can and Can't Bring In

Mexican customs at GDL can be stricter than travelers expect about certain food items. The random "red light" system means even legitimate travelers occasionally get a bag inspection. Here's what you need to know:

Up to 3L of alcoholic beveragesAllowed
Up to 200 cigarettes or 25 cigarsAllowed
Up to $500 USD in personal goodsAllowed
Medications in original prescription packagingAllowed
Fresh fruits, vegetables, or plantsProhibited
Meat products (including processed meats)Prohibited
More than $10,000 USD in cash (undeclared)Prohibited
Firearms or weapons without permitProhibited

For prescription medications, always carry them in their original pharmacy packaging with the label showing your name and the prescription. Customs officers at GDL may ask for documentation for controlled substances.

What to Leave at Home

  • Heavy guidebooks — download a Mexico or Jalisco travel app instead. Physical guidebooks take up valuable bag space.
  • Excessive cash in USD — you'll get better rates using ATMs in Mexico. Bring just enough for the first day.
  • Your entire clothing wardrobe — Guadalajara has excellent shopping. If you forget something, you can buy it locally, often cheaper.
  • Expensive jewelry or flashy items that attract unwanted attention in crowded market areas.
