Why We Write Our Own FAQ — and Don't Just Summarize the Airport's Official Website

Official airport FAQ pages are written to protect the airport, not to help the traveler. They're carefully hedged, systematically vague about anything that could generate a complaint, and updated on a schedule that has nothing to do with when things actually change. I say this as someone who has cross-referenced the official GDL website against the on-the-ground reality enough times to notice the gaps.

Our FAQ is different in three ways. First, we answer the question that was actually asked — not a sanitized version of it. If you ask "how early should I arrive for a 7 AM Volaris departure," the honest answer involves the specific chaos that is GDL's Pier B on a Monday morning, not a generic "90 minutes recommended." Second, we revise answers when we personally observe things have changed — not on a quarterly schedule driven by a content calendar. Third, and most importantly, every answer is written by someone who has actually been through this airport with a boarding pass.

Before you scroll into the questions: three misconceptions come up so consistently in traveler messages to us that I want to flag them upfront. They're below — each one is something the official sources either don't address or actively mislead on.

3 Things Most Guides Get Wrong About GDL

— address these before you start the questions

You only need to arrive 1 hour early

Domestic: 1.5–2 hrs. International: 2.5–3 hrs.

GDL's security queues are fast by Mexican airport standards — but not when three Volaris and two VivaAerobus flights are boarding simultaneously at 7 AM. The 1-hour rule works at quiet times. It fails badly at peak departures.

"Terminal A" and "Terminal B" are different buildings

GDL is a single terminal with two piers — Pier A and Pier B

A very common confusion. You don't take a shuttle or train between them. Both piers are connected within the same building and the same secure area. Walking between the furthest gates takes about 14 minutes.

Lounges are available for all passengers at GDL

Lounges are exclusively in Pier A — domestic travelers have no lounge access

Both VIP lounges at GDL are post-security in Pier A (international). If you're flying domestically with Volaris or VivaAerobus from Pier B, there is no lounge option — Priority Pass doesn't help you here. Plan accordingly.
